Flash Cards for the Six Session Vajra Guru Yoga
Why? Because there's an alchemical, magical benefit to memorizing and reciting this ancient and profound text. From ancient times, the sages would expound on their realization and wisdom, and then they would encapsulate their knowledge into sutras - each of which was a short summary of some aspect of the wisdom they had taught. They then instructed their students to memorize the sutras. In this way, the student could then go off and carry the whole of the knowledge within them. By holding the sutra within their mind, they would be able to mentally 'unpack' the full meaning of the teaching. In the same way, each of the 85 sutras of the Six Session Vajra Guru Yoga acts as a handle for us to be able to reach into the meaning of this teaching and understand an aspect of our own unfoldment and awakening. Click the link at the bottom of the page below to read Mark's introduction to the text. As he says, "Each line is a step-wise explanation of the progression of the Guru Shakti as a seed inside your individual continuum... it describes line by line its progression and its awakening impact..." Memorization in itself is an amazing process. At first it may seem challenging, but as you continue and learn verse after verse, the mind actually grows and develops new 'muscles' to be able to hold more and more - and surprisingly, the process of memorization gets easier with each verse. And talk about a great technique to fight the memory-loss of aging - none better! There are other benefits to memorizing these verses as well. To learn these verses well requires a lot of repetition. In this way, each verse becomes like mantra, and fills the mind with purely positive, uplifting, spiritual influences. As you go about your day and hold the verse you're working on in your mind, you find these uplifting words replacing old habitual patterns of thought. And because of their relative complexity, the mind finds them interesting to turn over and over, in a very different way than working with a simple mantra. Through this practice, all of life starts to be transformed. The alchemy works its way into your cells. Of course, you don't need to memorize the verses to enjoy using these cards. Another great sadhana practice can be found in randomly drawing a new card each morning and hanging out with it, contemplating its meaning again and again throughout the day. Then of course there's the joy of following along with Mark's recitation while knowing the words from within the depths of your very being. This speaks to the essence of the practice of Guru Yoga.
