Why do we spend the time learning the mechanics of stopping the mind and switching off the senses? Because the operation of the senses drown out the most subtle operations of consciousness.
The waves of the mind are like the ripples on the surface of a pond. The water is stirred and becomes filled with reflective light; you can’t see through it to what’s below. Because the senses are hard-wired into the mind they are constantly producing these waves in your awareness; the mind stays continually agitated.
It’s just like trying to sit down and study a complex text with the TV, stereo, and radio on all at the same time. It’s just too much. When you want to study something that’s difficult or subtle you make it silent around you.
Constant refinement of attention is essential in order to become aware of the most subtle operations of consciousness found within the human form.
