“So it’s important to understand the value of your daily practice: the use of the breath, the awareness of gravity, the quality of relaxation, daily meditation. This is to bring the mind into contact with non-action, what the Zen guys call no-mind, where attention is present, but no thought is present because it’s perfectly fresh. It’s not layered over with thoughts which always express the past. There’s a major aspect of spiritual life, sadhana, that is one of housekeeping. You simply have to order your body, speech and mind. Just take everything out to the curb and have it picked up and have it go away.”
